Each year it is around 1 million people welcomed and thus the most visited aquarium of France.
The first aquarium of La Rochelle dates from 1970. It was placed in “La Ville en Bois” and had an area from 250 m2.
In 1988 it becomes the biggest aquarium of France open in “Les Minimes”, near La Rochelle centre, with, at that time an area from 1.600 m2.
The actual aquarium is nearest six times bigger and had been inaugurated in 2001.
It shows more than 500 different species in 3.000 m3 of water. That makes you understand, you need at last 2 hours to surround it.
Summer is the right time to enjoy this aquatic jewel. In fact, during July and Augustus the aquarium is open all days from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. the rest of the year.
Half of the entire volume of water is devoted to sharks… So, choose the good half for a swim.
